Who Exactly Is The Vulture?

One of the most anticipated films for 2017 is first Spider-Man film that takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) called Spider-Man: Homecoming.  While there was a small teaser trailer that was shown to fans at this year's SDCC, it really only focused on showing Peter Parker roaming the halls of his high school and introducing us to his friends that go to school with him there.  There were a few shots of him in costume, but it focused more on Peter Parker than it did Spidey.  Because of the lack of action scenes in the trailer, it's not really known what the storyline for the movie is going to be.  We do know that Marvel has signed Michael Keaton to play Adrian Toomes (a.k.a. The Vulture) but everything else we know has been strictly rumor.  So exactly who is Adrian Toomes, and how did he become The Vulture?

It should first be said that the Marvel universe in their comic books is loaded with scientists and inventors.  You've got Reed Richards, Tony Stark, and even Peter Parker, just to name a few.  They even have "evil scientists" like Victor Von Doom, Otto Octavius, and Adrian Toomes.  Toomes headed his own company named Bestman and Toomes Electronics, but his partner pushed him out and stole it from him while he was working on an new invention, one that would later become his Vulture suit.  Out of rage, he used his suit to try and find incriminating evidence on his partner and trashed his old business while he tore the place up looking for something that he could use against him.  He found nothing.  With his new suit, however, he found a thrill in daring daylight robberies, which led to he and Spider-Man coming into conflict.  He also was one of the original Sinister Six.

This version of Toomes (as opposed to the Ultimate version of the Vulture which I won't get into here because it doesn't really seem relevant) fits the Marvel mold a little better when it comes to their MCU.  Toomes is an inventor, and only becomes a villain when he gets betrayed by people that he trusted.  This will allow fans to relate to him on a different level as opposed to someone who is just evil, and make him more personable.  A character like this always makes for a good bad guy.  Should you root for him?  Should you root against him?

According to rumors, Michael Keaton's Toomes finds wreckage from one of the previous Avengers battles (most likely the Battle of New York) and incorporates the technology from it into his own designs to create his Vulture flying suit.  What drives him to do this, or if any of the comic book storyline will be used, we don't know.  Marvel has generally stayed true to their comic books when introducing fans of the MCU to new characters, but have been known to change their backgrounds as well (i.e. Star-Lord's father isn't Ego in the comic books, but will be in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).  If they develop Toomes right, and don't kill him off at the end of the movie, he could be a great recurring bad guy for future films, and not just in the Spider-Man films, but in other MCU movies, too.  Heck, we may still get a Sinister Six film at some point down the road, so they'll have to keep him around, right?

So what do you think about The Vulture being the big baddie in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming?  Do you think this was a good choice, or would you have gone a different direction?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
