Ghost Rider To Get New Origin Story For Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

After a shaky start, ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seemed to find it's footing after the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out.  After the fallout from the movie, Agent Coulson's team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had to go underground once it was learned that Hydra had infiltrated the organization.  During season two and three, the show focused on learning about Inhumans and seeking them out.  We also learned that Skye's real name is Daisy Johnson, and that she's an Inhuman as well.  If you follow Marvel comics, then you know that Daisy Johnson is an Inhuman that goes by the name of Quake.  In the comics, Johnson's father is Cal Zabo, who also goes by the name Mister Hyde.

With season four just around the corner, we learned after the San Diego Comic Con that Ghost Rider will be joining the show, but not the Ghost Rider that was portrayed by Nicolas Cage (Johnny Blaze) in the movies Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, but rather Robbie Reyes, who was ordered to be killed by Mister Hyde in the comic books, but Reyes made a deal to become the Ghost Rider, was revived and went on to defeat Zabo.  Now, we haven't seen Mister Hyde appear on the show since the end of season 2, so an obvious question that was raised to Jed Whedon, one of the showrunners for the program, was are we going to see Kyle Maclachlan, who portrayed Cal Zabo (a.k.a. Mister Hyde), make a return to the show?  Here's what Whedon had to say:

“We can’t say much about what we’re going to do with [Robbie Reyes’] origin, but we are doing our own spin on it. We don’t want people who have read the comics to know exactly what’s coming.”

While Marvel likes to be fairly true to the comic book characters and their origins, this wouldn't be the first time that they've changed one of their origin stories, and because we won't know how Ghost Rider fits into the story, it's not clear whether he'll be a friend to the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, or an enemy.  There are shots from the set of the show that have Skye going up against Ghost Rider's car, so make what you want out of that.  They could be fighting each other due to some sort of conflict, or they could be going up against each other in their first meeting, each thinking the other is a bad guy.  One thing is for certain, though.  Don't expect Reyes (played by Gabriel Luna) and Skye (played by Chloe Bennet) to hook up this season.  Bennet herself says:

“Not sure they like each other. Not very happy interactions. They have similar backgrounds. They’re both probably misunderstood, but none of that. She’s really hurting. She’s in a lot of pain. The only thing she wants is to have nothing to lose.”

So what are your thoughts on season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?  Are you excited to see Ghost Rider appear on the show, or do you think that they are straying too far from what the show was originally about?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.  Season 4 will premier September 20 at 10 PM on ABC.
