New Character To Join Cruise And Blunt In Live, Die, Repeat And Repeat

While the sequel was only just revealed, we are already learning quite a bit about the movie and the direction that the follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow is going to take.  Director Doug Liman sat down the other day for an interview with MTV HSC Podcast to discuss the upcoming film:

“I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I’m like, ‘No, a sequel should be smaller.’ You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation… So we can do way more focus on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that. I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.”

He went on to talk about the future of the "franchise":

“I see this as a two-movie franchise; there’s the completion of the story we set up in the first movie and the relationships between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt—because, remember, at the end of the first movie, she doesn’t know who he is—and that’s gonna launch us into an amazing new direction. It does pick up right where we left off, but it doesn’t keep going forward, because we’d screw with time, because the aliens screwed with time.”

That's an interesting take on a "franchise".  A two movie series that neatly bookends the entire story.  As far as when the movie will start production, it's too soon to tell.  Right now Cruise is busy working on Mission: Impossible 6, but it sounds like the project is at the top of the list of things Cruise wants to do.  As soon as I find out more, I'll let you know.

Castlevania Is Coming To Netflix

Netflix has just released a trailer for their upcoming animated series Castlevania, based on the widely popular Nintendo games from the 80's.  More specifically, it looks like it will be based on the third video game, Castlevania: Dracula's Curse.  You can check out the trailer in the video below:

Considering that the show will be viewed on Netflix, Adi Shanker, one of the producers for the show, has promised that it will live up to it's R-rating, and comparing it to Game of Thrones for the show's "vibe."  The show's season 1 will begin streaming on July 7, 2017.

Talk Picks Up For Spaceballs 2

So last week I told you that Tom Cruise confirmed that a sequel to Top Gun is happening, and now there's talk that another fan favorite might be getting a sequel...Spaceballs.  Mel Brooks, the legendary film maker that has given us some of the best and funniest movies ever to be made, recently attended a screening of the 1974 classic Young Frankenstein and after the showing he stuck around for a short Q & A.  While answering questions, someone asked him about the prospect of a Spaceballs sequel getting made.  Brooks replied:

“Well, you know, I’m doing it. MGM is slightly interested in doing it because of the new Star Wars…They think maybe, so we’re talking.

The interest in Star Wars is due to the success of The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.  Talk had been done in the late 90's for a Spaceballs sequel when The Phantom Menace was released, but I imagine that due to the lackluster performance that the three prequels made, the talk was quickly ended.

If a sequel does in fact get made, it may have a few of the original characters returning, but considering that a few of the original stars have passed (most notably John Candy) and that Rick Moranis has retired from acting and may not return, we might be given a movie with a whole new cast of characters.  Since the movie is in the early stages of being created, there is no news on when it will be released, but as soon as I find out, I'll let you all know.

Top Gun Sequel Confirmed By Tom Cruise

This guy can now be called the busiest man in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise has had a long and storied career, bringing us some of the most classic movies in cinema history, but the one that people most associate Cruise with is the 1986 film Top Gun.  While it wasn't a big favorite of critics, it went on to be somewhat of a cult-classic with fans of the film spanning the world.  It was so popular, in fact, that many were surprised that a sequel to the high-flying film was never made.  Over the years, though, there have been rumors that one was in the works, but it had never been confirmed...until now.

Cruise was recently a guest on Sunrise 7 promoting his upcoming film The Mummy.  The interviewer asked about the rumors of a Top Gun 2 happening, and Cruise answered in the affirmative.

"It's true.  Yeah, it's true.  You know what, I'm probably going to start filming it within the next year.  I know.  It's happening - it's definitely happening."

There you go, folks.  Straight from the Maverick's mouth.  While this is the first bit of concrete news that we've been given that a sequel is in fact happening, any idea of how they plan on bringing Maverick and Iceman (Val Kilmer) back into a story that has them both flying again is still a mystery.  It's been over thirty years since the two were the best hotshot pilots, and I'm sure they both climbed the ranks of the Navy fairly quick...so what will draw them back out to climb into a cockpit again to take flight?  We'll just have to wait and find out.

Let's bee conservative and say that it will take them around 18-months to film the movie.  I'm going high in the number of months, because I know that Cruise had said that if he were to do a sequel, he wanted to use real planes and not CGI everything.  If that's the case, and they start filming within the next year, the movie will probably be released either late 2019, or sometime in 2020...but that's just a guess.  Right now, no release date has been confirmed, but as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know.

Tom Hardy Is Going To Be The New Venom!

This is pretty cool!

With the surge of popularity behind the upcoming Spider-man: Homecoming film that will be released later this year, Sony feels confident in moving forward with their standalone Venom movie, and they just signed Tom Hardy to play Eddie Brock (a.k.a. Venom).  Nobody saw this coming, and it couldn't have been more welcome news.  Hardy is the perfect choice for the role, and with his experience that he brings to the project, it's promising to be an epic production.

Sony's plans is to go all out for 18 months of production filming, and have the film released into theaters October 5, 2018.  This is a pretty ambitious goal, but with a veteran actor like Hardy, who has worked on a number of blockbuster films, it shouldn't be a problem.  My only concern with the film is it's director, Ruben Fleischer.  This is a guy that I'm not very familiar with, so I went to his IMDB page, and it looks like while he's been an executive producer on a lot of projects, the only real experience he has in directing is with television shows.  Hopefully, he'll be able to handle a project of this magnitude, and believe me, this is an important movie for Sony, one that they have to have be successful.  All indicators are that this film will not take place in the MCU, and if Sony is really serious about building up their own superhero universe, this will be it's tent pole, not Spider-Man.  At some point down the road, Spider-Man may join the Venom Universe, but while the agreement between Sony and Marvel continues to take place, we shouldn't expect to hear any references to Peter Parker or Spider-Man in the upcoming films.

Tom Hardy's ability to play a down-to-Earth character or a complete psychopath will bring an incredible amount of conflict to a character that, in the comic books, is consistently upstaged by Spider-Man, until he gives into his symbiotic host which is Venom.  How they will work around the Spider-Man angle in the film has yet to be revealed to us, and I'm sure it won't until the movie comes out.  With Hardy as Venom, though, what we can almost surely expect is one hell of a movie!

Zach Snyder To Step Away From The Justice League Movie

Now before anybody goes on a tear saying that this is just one more setback for the DCEU movies, and just another director leaving a project due to studio conflicts, back up.  Zach Snyder is in fact leaving the Justice League movie, but it's because of a family tragedy that took place back in March.  Snyder's daughter commit suicide, and instead of announcing it to the world, he wanted time to grieve and to give him and his family private time to mourn their loss without the worry of people pestering him for comments or reactions.  It's been tough for the director, and he finally came out with a statement to address his leaving:

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

Who can blame him?  Nobody should have to go through anything like this.

With Snyder stepping away, Warner Brothers and DC have handed the reigns to the movie over to Joss Whedon (yes, the same Joss Whedon that directed the first two Avengers movies) while dealing with reshoots and post production for the film.  This will obviously add a lot more to Whedon's plate than I'm sure he was expecting after signing on to direct the upcoming Batgirl movie, but he's actually already been involved with the Justice League movie, even before Snyder decided to walk away.  Snyder asked Whedon to help with some of the rewrites for the reshoots, so the two have been on the same page as far as where they want this movie to go for some time now.

It can't hurt DC and WB's project having a name like Joss Whedon attached to it, so it's nice to know that it's been left in good hands.  And Mr. Snyder?  We are all sorry for the loss of your daughter. Thoughts and prayers, my friend.

Why? Why Make Another One???

Some movie franchises just need to be left alone.  The more you try to build them up, the worse they become.  Case in point?  Terminator.  Is this really the only thing that Arnold Schwarzenegger has to fall back on?  Not even the great James Cameron can save this series, but it sounds like that's what he's going to try and do.

Okay, look...the first two movies were the best that have been made for the franchise.  The third movie, well, why did they even bother?  It was the same old, same old.  Terminator: Salvation was a decent attempt, but it still fell flat.  In 2015 they tried to reboot the whole thing with Terminator: Genisys, however it bombed here in the states.  It did do well overseas, though, and this caused Paramount to reconsider a sequel to the film.  The rumors of a sixth Terminator film have been all over the place...first it was scrapped, then it was going to be made, then it was shelved, now it's back on.  And how does Paramount plan on saving this franchise?  By bringing back the man who started it all, James Cameron. It doesn't sound like Cameron will be directing it, which makes sense, since he's currently involved with three new Avatar sequels, but he will be producing it.  The director that was initially rumored to direct was Deadpool's Tim Miller, but no formal announcement has been made.

To be honest, the only thing that has really been confirmed is James Cameron wants to produce the movie, and that Schwarzenegger will appear in some form in the film.  Arnold was at the Cannes Film Festival and admitted that he'd talked with Cameron about the new movie.  He said:

“It is back. It is moving forward. He [Cameron] has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise. I will be in the movie.”

It's way too early to say when the film will start production or even when it will be released, but when I hear something I'll let you know.  In my honest opinion, though, they should just leave well enough alone and just let it live on in DVD's and Blu-Ray's.

Mortal Kombat Reboot To Be Like An "R-Rated Avengers"

So in keeping up with the current trend (because it's working sooo well!) Hollywood is going to give us a rebooted Mortal Kombat movie that they are describing as an R-Rated Avengers...of course, you probably already picked up on that from the title of this post, right?  I have to admit, I loved the first Mortal Kombat movie.  I was a HUGE Christopher Lambert fan after watching Highlander and he was hilarious as Lord Rayden.  The sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was horrible.  Won't even talk about it here.  If you had to gauge the reboot against the previous films, I hope that it'll be at least better than Annihilation.

New Line Cinema announced back in 2011 that a reboot was in the works, and that Oren Uziel was going to be writing the screenplay.  While on a recent press tour to talk about his latest movie for Netflix, Shimmer Lake, Uziel spoke with Collider about his efforts on penning the reboot six years ago, and had this to say about the script:

“Well, and again I don’t know what remains of this, but I know that it was going to be—it’s almost like if you took The Avengers, or if you took a storyline like that and set it in a sort of hard-R, over-the-top violence and hard-edged world of Mortal Kombat. It was a little bit like that, it was a little bit like a Wanted-type story that brought together a bunch of these characters and just pulled zero punches, and had a tone that was still fun but very dark.”

This makes sense...I mean, comparing it to the first Avengers film.  They basically have the same storyline.  A group of heroes that have never worked together, butt heads, eventually come together as a group to fight a common evil.  See?  Almost identical.  As far as the R-Rating goes, does this really surprise anybody?  Look at how violent the video game is!  If they don't make it an R-Rated film, they might as well not even bother making it.  Uziel also talked about the script that he wrote in the past tense, so we may not even get that particular story for the film.  Regardless of which script that they decide to use (and since it's a movie based on a video game, which usually doesn't translated very well into a movie!) let's just hope that it turns out better than Street Fighter and Mario Brothers!

Star Trek: Discovery Releases Trailer

CBS's new Star Trek: Discovery has had some trouble getting going, but it now looks like it's finally on track for fall release.  While the pilot episode for the show will be released on their network station, the rest of the series will only be available on their streaming network, CBS All Access.  The show takes place ten years before Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise began their five-year mission.  You can see the first look at the show in the trailer down below:

Since CBS All Access is a pay site, they needed to give fans something spectacular to see in the trailer to try and get people to sign up for their service, and I think they did a pretty good job.  Star Trek fans should enjoy what they've seen, and may be hoping for a show that is truer to the original series than the movies that have been released.  While I really enjoy the movies that have been done, a lot of fans have had serious misgivings about the trilogy and have voiced their concerns over the web.  Maybe this will give them what they have felt has been missing.

***UPDATE!!!***

It looks like CBS isn't ready to release this trailer yet, they pulled it, so I apologize that it's not available.  Trust me, though...it was pretty awesome!

Simon Pegg And Nick Frost Are Teaming Up Again

One of the best duos in movies has been Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.  They done a number of movies and television shows together, which include Spaced (television), Shaun of the Dead (movie), How Fuzz (movie), At World's End (movie), and Paul (movie).  Their comedic timing and obvious on/off screen friendship make these actors two of the most fun to watch when you want to escape from reality for a while.  This is why I was excited to hear that they're teaming back up for a new project.

Deadline is reporting that Pegg and Frost have started their own production company Stolen Picture.  Their first project that they will be doing is a movie called Slaughterhouse Rulez, which will be reminiscent of their movie Shaun of the Dead.  It's being billed as a romantic comedy that's also a zombie movie.

The movie will take place at "an elite boarding school," which the students nicknamed Slaughterhouse where boys and girls are groomed for power and greatness, and they’re about to meet their match.” It's protagonist, Don Wallace, is an average person who isn't prepared for  a baffling new world of arcane rules and rituals, presided by sadistic sixth formers.”   All of the students at the boarding school are obsessed with their status there, with Clemsie, the "school goddess," being at the top of the pecking order.  A fracking company comes to town and begins to work on the school grounds, it unleashes "unspeakable horrors, and a new hierarchy is formed in which “pupils, teachers, and the school matron become locked in a bloody battle for survival.”

The movie is being written and directed by Crispin Mills, with help from co-writer Henry Fitzherbert, and will be produced by Pegg and Frost.  While there has been no release date announced, Sony has agreed to back the film, and will also (presumably) be releasing it.  When I get more information about the film, I'll let you all know, so in the mean time just keep an eye out for more news on Slaughterhouse Rulez,

New Character Created For "Ready Player One" Movie

One of the biggest original science fiction novels to come out over the last decade was Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline.  It was such a success that it came as no surprise that the movie rights were picked up, and it was soon announced that Steven Spielberg would direct the film.  Due to the number of different movie, television, and video games (not to mention Dungeons and Dragons), Spielberg admitted that not everything from the book would make it into the film.  One of the reasons is due to copyrights, and the other is Spielberg himself.  There are a lot of references to movies that he's done in the past, and he said he didn't want it to seem like it was a love film to all of his work.  One of the changes that should be a positive for the movie is the introduction of a new character that wasn't in the book, i-R0k.  This new character will be played by TJ Miller, and the actor recently sat down with Fandango to spill a little bit about the movie and his character:

“I’m not in the book. Some plot points are different, but I’m the only new character. I play i-R0k and basically I am a funny, or at least mildly amusing, Boba Fett. In the OASIS, I am a better player than Aech or Daito or any of those guys. I am sort of unequivocally the best bounty hunter, but I work freelance. While all the Sixers work for IOI and Sorrento [Mendelsohn], he has to commission me and I get an incredibly high fee to either find people and kill them or make them starve in the game.

My character in the movie wants to be Boba Fett. Like that’s his hero, his idol, which isn’t far off for many Star Wars fans, myself included.

I actually mimicked Boba Fett’s voice. And in the original Star Wars he only ever speaks four or five times in the movies, so I could only learn from ‘What about me? He’s no good to me dead.’ And then ‘As you wish.’ And I used the British actor’s voice instead of the f***ing Australian’s from the prequels – Lucas, you son of a bitch! – and so, I think it’s actually a really fun character.”

Not much else has been revealed about the film, except for a few images that have made their way online.  If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it.  This will be one of the few new movies that will be coming out that is original, is a stand alone, and isn't a reboot or a sequel.

Ready Player One is scheduled for release March 30, 2018.

This Is Why James Gunn Almost Passed On Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Before Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was released in theaters, there was a lot of speculation as to whether or not James Gunn would return to direct vol. 3 in the trilogy.  Luckily for us, he announced soon after the movie was previewed for critics that he would, in fact, return to write and direct vol. 3, but why was there any hesitation about doing this for him in the first place?  Gunn has finally opened up about why, and what he told fans explains why he waited until after the movie was released to talk about it.  If you haven't figured it out yet, there are ***MAJOR SPOILERS!!!*** that deal with Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 in the next several paragraphs!

Still with me?  Okay, good.  We're jumping right into the spoilers here, due to the fact that it deals directly with why Gunn was hesitant about returning for vol. 3.  The reason was that he wasn't sure if he wanted to helm the movie was because of his decision to kill off Michael Rooker's character Yondu.  Rooker and Gunn have an amazing working relationship, having done several movies together, and Yondu's death was weighing heavily on him.  Here's what he had to say in a video he put out for fans:

"Let me tell you, there was nothing harder for me than the choice to kill Yondu in this movie. Michael Rooker, for all the crap I give him, is one of my closest friends in the world and the last thing I wanted to do was to make a movie without Michael Rooker in the future. I almost didn’t do Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because there was no Michael Rooker in it and I couldn’t see making the movie without him. He means that much to me and I love him that much."

While writing the film, he even tried multiple drafts where Yondu didn't die, but it never really worked out for the story.

"[Killing Yondu was] the hardest choice I’ve ever had to make from a storytelling perspective. I wrote a bunch of treatments where Yondu did not die. There were other endings — he was saved at the last minute after taking the sacrificial stance, and I wrote many drafts like that. And I realized I was being dishonest. That was not what this story was. For me, the most important thing in making a movie is to tell the truest and most honest story possible, and that’s whether you’re making a $500,000 indie film or a $200 million dollar spectacle film. And the truth of this story, this was about a father’s true and ultimate love for his son. This is a movie about, Who really are our fathers? Who really are our siblings? And the only way for it to be an honest story was for Yondu to die, and anything else would have been half measures, and would have been me backing out because I was afraid to tell the truth. And so that’s why Yondu dies."

Just because he dies in this movie, though, doesn't mean that we won't see him in vol. 3.  He could return in character in a flashback, or even appear as a CGI character like Nathan Fillion did in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  Either way, it would keep their working steak in tact.  Think "Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell".  Luckily for us, Gunn will see the trilogy through to it's conclusion, which is nothing but great for all of us fans.

Deleted Scene Shows This Character Was Supposed To Be Mentioned In "Logan"

Earlier this year we were treated to the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and the R-rated Logan was everything that fans had hoped for.  Pretty soon, the movie will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in two different formats.  The first will be the theatrical version, and the second will be a "noir" edition of the film...it will be a black and white version.  While it was probably the best Wolverine story that we've been given hands down, there were a couple of things that were missing that fans were hoping to see, like an appearance from Sabretooth.  However, new details have been revealed in the form of a deleted scene that makes reference to Logan's sometimes "evil brother."

Just a small warning...some ***SPOILERS!!!*** are coming, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, then you may want to hold off on reading this until after you watch the movie.

Still with me?  Good.  So...this deleted scene hasn't been officially released by 20th Century Fox, but it nevertheless somehow made it's way onto YouTube.  In the scene, Logan is sleeping on a couch after reaching all of the mutant children who were trying to make it to the boarder to safety.  One of the kids named Bobby shows Logan some of his X-Men action figures, one of which was Victor Creed (a.k.a. Sabretooth). When asked if he was real, or just a made up character like a lot of other things in comics, Logan replies that yeah, he was based on a real mutant.

It would have been nice for them to have left this scene in the movie, just for the simple fact that it would have brought everything and everyone full circle, in a way.  Live Schreiber was asked about his early invitation to be in the movie during a recent interview, and he had this to say:

"There was an invitation early on from Hugh Jackman and [director James Mangold] and I would have loved to work on it. It was very difficult given Ray Donovan's schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story. I think it's a terrific movie. I'm just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire."

Even though the scene was cut for whatever reason by director James Mangold (I'm sure he had his reasons for doing so) the movie was undoubtedly a huge success.  Quick question for all of you reading this...when the movie gets released on May 23, which version are you going to watch, the theatrical version (which is in color) or the black and white version?  Let me know in the comments section down below on which one you choose and why.

Three X-Force Members To Appear In Deadpool Sequel

We all know that 20th Century Fox is planning to expand their "X-Men Universe" by making a New Mutants movie and an X-Force movie.  They're hoping the latter might be able to allow Ryan Reynold's Deadpool character to join the larger X-Men universe to pull all of their properties together, a la Marvel's Avengers.  Since Deadpool is already an established box-office hit, in order for them to garner interest in their upcoming X-Force movie, they are going to introduce several of them to us in Deadpool 2.  Here's a list that I pulled off of WeGotThisCovered.com that tells us who they are and a little bit about each one:

Sunspot
Real name Roberto DaCosta, Sunspot is a mutant character who first manifested his powers at the age of 14 when he was playing in his championship soccer match for his school team in Rio de Janeiro. In doing so, he realized he can become cloaked in darkness which was done in an effort to stop a bully. Absorbing all of the light increases his physical strength.

Feral
Real name Maria Callasantos, Feral is the sister of Thornn who first appeared in New Mutants #99 in March of 1991. The cat-like mutant has a feline appearance, enhanced senses and agility, an impressive healing factor, sharp claws, fangs, and a prehensile tail. She has a lot in common with a really mean cat.

Shatterstar
Real name Gaveedra Seven, Shatterstar has existed in Marvel Comics under several aliases which include Benjamin Russell, Star, and Star Face. He is the son of Dazzler and Longshot and, thanks to the time travel story lines often created in comics, is responsible for the creation of Longshot. Shatterstar is known to have eyes which appear to be clear or silvery, hollow bones, and being lighter than the average person.

We also know that Cable, who was the first leader of the X-Force team in the comic books, will also be appearing in the movie, played by Josh Brolin.  Brolin is also playing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so if his character survives the next two Avengers movies and Marvel and 20th Century fox come to some sort of agreement like Marvel did with Sony, I'm not sure how they'll handle it.  It might not make much of a difference, since Thanos is basically just a CGI character.  He could play Cable and voice Thanos without any issues coming up.  But that's just pure speculation on something that may never happen.

It doesn't sound like these X-Force members will have a very big impact on the movie, and may only appear in the post-credits scenes, and will probably be added to the movie after the initial filming has completed, since they haven't cast anybody for these roles yet.  Kind of like what the Russo brothers did while filming Captain America: Civil War.  They shot the scenes with Spider-Man in costume with a stand-in actor until the role was filled by Tom Holland, and then added his scenes after the initial filming had all but been completed.

So while their appearances may be small and short, we'll get a closer look at some of the X-Force team when Deadpool 2 arrives next year.

Has James Gunn's Elusive Easter Egg Finally Been Found?

After James Gunn gave us the first Guardians of the Galaxy, he admitted that he threw in a lot of different Easter Eggs into the movie, but there was one that no body has found...some have come close, he said, but it remains hidden.  That is, until recently...maybe.

Before I move forward, know that there are ***SPOILERS!!!*** for both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, so if you haven't seen either of them, just wanted to give you a head's up.

Still with me?  Okay, cool.  Check this out.  Over at Screenrant.com, a theory has been posted with some pretty convincing evidence that Gunn told us how Peter Quill's mother, Meredith, was actually killed.  At the beginning of the first movie, we see her lying in a hospital bed, dying of cancer.  Nothing out of the ordinary about that, it happens to millions of people around the world, except there may have been a clue telling us that it wasn't a natural occurrence that took her life, but one that had been designed.

In the first film, there were location names and coordinates given when jumping from place to place in the movie.  But if you decode these coordinates, you get a messages from them.  Check it out in the picture below:

You see the messages above?  the person that poses this theory says that the "X" at the end of the "Knowhere" message refers to Ego, Peter Quill's father, who essentially is Meredith's ex.  Did James Gunn tell us what to expect from the sequel in the first movie?  It looks pretty right on.  We do learn that Ego caused Meredith's cancer in the sequel, and...that's as much as I'm going to reveal about the sequel!  Ha!  It just came out last weekend here, I don't want to give away the whole movie!  You have to go out and see it for yourself!  But the Easter Egg was pretty cool, so I wanted to share it.  Thanks to Screenrant.com for finding it!

A New Hellboy Movie Being Made, But Not Hellboy 3

Only in Hollywood and politics would this make sense...Hellboy 3 doesn't get approved to get made, so what do you do?  You make a reboot.

According to insiders, Hellboy 3 fell through because director of the first two Hellboy movies, Guillermo del Toro, and its producers couldn't come to an agreement on the budget.  So instead they're going to reboot the entire franchise and give it an R-rating.  Right now, the working title for the reboot is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, and is being written by Andrew Cosby.  He recently sat down with Silver Screen Beat for an interview on the subject and had this to say about the reboot:

"I can't really talk about the specifics with regard to the story, which they're keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy.  Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor's edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that's what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.  Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen.  The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be."

Unfortunately for fans of the original two films, Ron Perlman will not be coming back to play the title character.  In a tweet the other day, Perlman thanked his fans and said, "Getting alotta twitter love 2nite.  Feelin it.  Diggin it.  Much obliged, you, the faithful."  Del Toro also sent him a tweet sending out his love to Perlman along with other fans, to which Perlman responded, "Me too, little brother.  Together through life..."

So who will be playing Hellboy?  Sounds like David Harbour (Stranger Things)  has been signed on to play the lead.  No word yet on what to expect from the reboot, or when it will be released.  As soon as I hear more, I'll let you know...

Title For Sequel To "Edge Of Tomorrow" Revealed

Even though the movie Edge of Tomorrow didn't do "great" in the theaters (it doubled it's production cost, which means it basically broke even), it's gained quite a following ever since it was released on DVD and Blu-Ray.  One of the reasons some critics think that the movie did poorly was because of it's name, so when it was released on DVD, they used the movie's actual title as a "secondary title," and instead used Live, Die, Repeat on the front of the cover.

Since the movie's spike in popularity once it was released on DVD, rumors started to swirl about a sequel being made.  That got fans excited (at least, for everyone that actually saw the movie!) and this past weekend we learned that there will in fact be a sequel.  It's title?  Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat.  Like Matt Wood wrote over at Cinemablend.com, at least they didn't call it On The Edge of The Edge of Tomorrow!  (Good one, Matt!)  When it was revealed, director Doug Liman had this to say about the upcoming project:

"We have an amazing story! It's incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we'll do it. But it's not an if, it's a when."

Liman has also said that the movie is "a sequel that is a prequel," whatever that means.  He went on:

“I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea.  So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”

Yep.  That cleared it up.  Clear as mud.  This still doesn't take away from the fact that we will be getting a sequel to a truly great science-fiction movie.  The reason I enjoyed it so much was because one, it was original, and two, it was a stand alone film...well, until recently anyway.  If they weren't able to make a sequel, it could stand up on it's own.  The movie was based off of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's "Japanese military science-fiction light novel" All You Need Is Kill, but it sounds like that the sequel will be more of an original story rather than being adopted from other sources.

No word on when the movie will start filming or when it will be released, but as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know.

5-25-77 coming 5-25-17

This past weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 hit theaters, and science-fiction/comic book fans ran to theaters in droves to see the movie.  James Gunn, who directed the film, has been giving us an escape from reality with his movies, as has JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and numerous other directors.  One of those directors is Patrick Read Johnson.  Have you ever wondered where these directors get their inspiration?  In the case of Johnson, we'll soon be able to see first hand what set him on his way as a director.  Check this trailer out:

Johnson's biopic film has been a lifetime in the making.  Not the movie itself, but his journey to get to the point so ha could make it.  It started with the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, but truly spiked when he saw Star Wars.  Johnson started working on this movie back in 2004, and after 13 years, he's finally completed it, just in time for the 40th anniversary for Star Wars.  So enjoy the trailer, and let me know what you think about it in the comments section down below.

Not Going To Be Able To Post Tomorrow...So Here's A Happy "May The Fourth Be With You" Video!

Not much to say except "Happy Star Wars Day!"  And in case you've been living under a rock for the  last decade or so, May the 4th is Star Wars Day.  Get it?  "May the Force be with you," and "May the Fourth be with you!"  Get it?  Anyways...Here ya go!

And here's one more that I love from many, many years ago...

Is This The End Of Batman?

***SOPILERS FOR BATMAN #22***

This week's release of Batman #22 had both Batman and Flash back in the Flashpoint universe, which was supposed to have been erased, but something (or someone) was holding it together.  However, for whatever reason it was held together vanished, and it began to unravel once again.

Prior to the Flashpoint universe's destruction, Bruce was able to spend some time with his father, Thomas, the Batman from the Flashpoint universe.  After learning about Bruce's son Damien, Thomas asks him to do something before he and Barry left to go back to their own universe.

So will Bruce heed his father's advice and give up the mantle of the Bat?  Probably not, but I'd like to see how he struggles with doing what he does best, or listening to his dad.  And it looks like Dr. Manhattan might finally make his appearance at the end of this crossover...

Marvel Comics Trying To Do Damage Control

It looks like Marvel Comics is alienating their readers even further...

It's no secret that Marvel's comic book sales have been in a downward spiral for a while now.  Even Marvel's VP of comics, David Gabriel, had to admit this in a meeting with distributers.  In that meeting he said that readers don't want to see more diversity in their comics.  He attributed this to their slumping sales.  I don't know if that's really the case, look at the Miles Morales Spider-Man.  He's one of their best sellers right now.  I believe that it has more to do with them screwing around with classic characters and turning them into something that they're not.  Examples?  Having Thor lose his hammer only to have Jane Foster become the "female" Thor, or having Tony Stark pass the Iron Man suit over to Riri Williams, or more recently having Captain America turn into a Hydra agent.  It's not that they're upset about "diversity in comics," they just want to read their favorite comics and enjoy the characters that they grew up reading, not a different person playing that same character.  I know I used Morales' Spider-Man as an example of a great comic book, but he's in a different universe than Peter Parker's Spider-Man, and you can still read Parker's Spider-Man adventures if you want to.

The Captain America turn is really hurting Marvel's sales.  Thanks to the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, people associate Hydra with Nazis.  Marvel has tried to explain to people that Hydra and Nazis aren't one and the same, but it hasn't worked.  In fact, their sales have dropped so much that Marvel sent out a press release begging fans to stay.  Check it out:

“With Marvel Comics’ ‘Secret Empire,’ the forces of Hydra have taken over and, due to the villainous actions of the Red Skull, have manipulated Marvel’s greatest hero, Captain America, and forced him to adopt their cause."

"At Marvel, we want to assure all of our fans that we hear your concerns about aligning Captain America with Hydra and we politely ask you to allow the story to unfold before coming to any conclusion. Captain America, will always be a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe who will stand up for what is right, and ‘Secret Empire’ will be the biggest challenge Steve has ever faced.”

It might not sound like actual begging, but can you think of another time when they sent out any statement asking fans to stick around to see how the story unfolds?  Most people would do that on their own, unless the story sucked or the story angered them to the point of dropping the title from their reading list.  Kind of like what's happening now with Captain America.  Steve Rogers may return to the man he was before this Hydra storyline began, but unfortunately for Marvel, the damage has already been done.

New Role For Jeremy Renner

This one caught my eye, may not be your cup of tea, but I wanted to share it with you anyway.  Jeremy Renner has recently been signed on to play John Henry "Doc" Holiday in an upcoming feature that will be based on two different novels about the famous gun slinger, Doc and Epitaph: A Novel Of The O.K. Corral.  Renner and Don Handfield's production company, The Combine, will be producing the film.  in a joint statement, Renner and Handfield had this to say about the upcoming feature:

“We are excited to re-introduce this classic American character to a whole new audience by chronicling Doc Holliday’s incredible transformation from Average Joe dentist to a man who Wyatt Earp called the ‘nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun [he] ever knew.’”

Renner will join several other actors that have portrayed the dentist-turned-gun slinger in films.  My favorite was Val Kilmer in the movie Tombstone, which also starred Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp.  Kirk Douglas played "Doc" in the movie Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Stacey Keach played him in Doc, and Dennis Quaid played him in Wyatt Earp.

While Renner is best known for his supporting role as Hawkeye in the MCU movies, he's proven to be a cinematic draw for fans in other movies like The Hurt Locker (which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor) and The Town (which he was nominated for an Oscar for best Supporting Actor), a couple of Mission Impossible movies, and last year's The Arrival. As I hear more about this film (like when it will start filming and when it will be released) I will let you know.

Saw A Very Fun...And Very Dark Movie This Weekend!

Sorry I didn't post earlier today, I was on the road traveling across states, but it was worth it!  I went home to visit my folks (which EVERYBODY should do when you have the opportunity!)  and they treated me to a movie that was at a little independent movie theater called The Neon.  It was not a movie I would've been able to watch (at least, not until it came out on video, but there aren't that many "video stores" around anymore) but I'm glad I saw.  The trailer looked great, and it really was, but it was a lot more dark and twisted than the preview made it out to be.  Still, it was a lot of fun!  Check out the trailer down below, and I'll be back tomorrow with a regular post!  Enjoy!
