Top Gun Sequel Confirmed By Tom Cruise

This guy can now be called the busiest man in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise has had a long and storied career, bringing us some of the most classic movies in cinema history, but the one that people most associate Cruise with is the 1986 film Top Gun.  While it wasn't a big favorite of critics, it went on to be somewhat of a cult-classic with fans of the film spanning the world.  It was so popular, in fact, that many were surprised that a sequel to the high-flying film was never made.  Over the years, though, there have been rumors that one was in the works, but it had never been confirmed...until now.

Cruise was recently a guest on Sunrise 7 promoting his upcoming film The Mummy.  The interviewer asked about the rumors of a Top Gun 2 happening, and Cruise answered in the affirmative.

"It's true.  Yeah, it's true.  You know what, I'm probably going to start filming it within the next year.  I know.  It's happening - it's definitely happening."

There you go, folks.  Straight from the Maverick's mouth.  While this is the first bit of concrete news that we've been given that a sequel is in fact happening, any idea of how they plan on bringing Maverick and Iceman (Val Kilmer) back into a story that has them both flying again is still a mystery.  It's been over thirty years since the two were the best hotshot pilots, and I'm sure they both climbed the ranks of the Navy fairly quick...so what will draw them back out to climb into a cockpit again to take flight?  We'll just have to wait and find out.

Let's bee conservative and say that it will take them around 18-months to film the movie.  I'm going high in the number of months, because I know that Cruise had said that if he were to do a sequel, he wanted to use real planes and not CGI everything.  If that's the case, and they start filming within the next year, the movie will probably be released either late 2019, or sometime in 2020...but that's just a guess.  Right now, no release date has been confirmed, but as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know.
