Civil War Deleted Scenes Delve Into Black Widow's Past

One of the most frustrating things for a director is having to slice down your movie to make a presentable run time,  having to decide what stays in, and what ends up on the cutting room floor.  It's also frustrating for fans, too, knowing that there's more of the story that we weren't privy to.  Thanks to the junior novelization for Captain America: Civil War, we may have learned about one of these scenes.  In a scene early on in the movie, Natasha and Steve are talking, and she tells him to look out for his friend, Bucky.  It goes on to say:

“Natasha studied Cap’s expression of resolve. Finally, she said, “In Russia, in the Red Room, there were dozens of us. All girls, all young. We lived together. They let us be friends. Then they dropped us in the tundra, two weeks’ walk from home, with just enough supplies for one of us to survive.” Cap looked at her, understanding her meaning. “Don’t let them push us into the cold,” she said.”

We haven't learned anything about Black Widow's history except for the small "flashback" scene they gave us in Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Why?  And why haven't they given B;ack Widow her own solo movie yet?  Look, I know that there's a lot of people out there saying that Marvel needs to branch out and show us more female leads, and I understand that they are going to be making a Captain Marvel movie, but why go with a relative unknown like Captain Marvel and not give us the Black Widow movie that everyone is dying to see?    Heck, even Joss Whedon has said that he'd direct the thing!  Don't believe me?  Here's what he had to say when the subject came up in a conversation with IGN:

“If somebody pointed to me and said, ‘You want to make a Black Widow movie?’ the answer would be ‘Duh.’ For two reasons: I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound and so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your Superman territory it’s harder to maintain that sort of gritty action that the Russo brothers do so beautifully. And she’s got that kind of thing… and really do a spy thriller, really do a good, paranoid sort of John LeCarré on crack sort of thing. Also, Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard, but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot.”

So I have to ask Marvel this one question:  What's taking so long?  Johansson has already shown that she can headline a movie and it'll make money, and the fans of the MCU already love her character, so again, what's taking so long?

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I think that a solo Black Widow movie would go over great.  Do you think I'm wrong?  Would you want to go see a Black Widow movie that delves into her personal life and past, or do you think that would ruin the mystique of the character?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.

  1. I'd love to see her do a solo movie as well. I'm curious if they wait much longer, we'll end up with a prequel with a different, younger actress.

    1. She's not that old...yet. I hope it doesn't come to that...like Han Solo!😀
