Star Trek: Discovery Trailer Released At SDCC

Another trailer that made it's way over to SDCC this year was one for the upcoming Star Trek television series, Star Trek: Discovery.  Check out the short teaser trailer down below:

Not bad for not really showing us anything except the ship...kind of looks like a cross between a Federation ship and a Klingon Bird of Prey.  While not much is known about the series yet, we do know that the pilot episode is going to air on CBS in January 2017, but every episode after that will only be able to be viewed by streaming CBS All Access, so if you're a Star Trek fan, you'd better sign up.  We also know that it will only be a 13 episode season, unlike it's predecessors, and instead of featuring the "mission of the week" each time you tune in, it will have one long story arc that will span the entire season.  Filming is set to take place in Toronto soon, but as of writing this post, no actors have been confirmed to have signed onto the project yet.  Bryan Fuller is being billed as co-creator and executive producer for the show and David Semel will direct the pilot episode.

The series is rumored to be taking place after the events in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Even though at the end of the movie (TUC) it seemed that the Klingons and the Federation were about to put all of their squabbling in the past, it's being reported that the Klingons will be the villains of the series.  Maybe not the entire race, but at least the ones that think joining the Federation is a bad idea.  From what is being reported on the new series, it sounds like it's going to follow the ideas behind TOS as opposed to TNG.  Should be fun finding out.

So what are your thoughts on this project?  When JJ Abrams reboot the movie franchise with Star Trek, I was blown away.  After Star Trek Into Darkness, not so much.  I haven't made it out to see Star Trek Beyond yet, and I've been getting mixed reviews from my friends that have seen it, although movie critics seems to be thinking that they did a great job with this one.  Maybe this new series is the shot-in-the-arm that the franchise needs to get it going again?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
