This Is Breaking News!!!

spider-man-avengers-2

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have announced that they have come to an agreement that will team the two studios together for the rebooting (is that a word? I don't know, but it fits) of the Spider-Man franchise.  The new Spider-Man will make his first appearance in an upcoming Marvel Universe film, and then break out into his own film franchise starting with a July 28, 2017 release date.  It's also being reported that they are exploring possibilities that would allow Marvel characters to show up in the Spider-Man Universe, as well.  Here is what Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger had to say about the deal:

"Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world.  We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

This new agreement doesn't mean that the Spider-Man property is being sold to Disney.  Sony will still own the rights, allowing them to choose release dates, say "yes" or "no" to ideas, and will also be the ones putting the money up for their movies, but with Marvel at the table, we're less likely to get another Amazing Spider-Man 2.

With the date already set for the new Spider-Man movie release, that only gives us a few possibilities for the web-head to make his first appearance in the MCU.  The most obvious choice will be for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.  The release date for the new Spider-Man film that was announced has also made Marvel change release dates for their upcoming movies that had previously been announced.

All of this was announced late Monday night, and the whole deal can be seen on Marvel.com.

This is pretty cool!
