It's getting more and more rare to find a really good science fiction movie that isn't a reboot or a sequel to something else. Luckily, Arrival looks to be one of those films. Based on the short story "Stories of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, Arrival doesn't look like your normal "first contact" movie (I'm talking about a first encounter movie, not the Star Trek film). Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Tzi Ma, and Mark O'Brien, the movie explores how important it is to be able to communicate with visitors from another planet. Here's a quick description of the teaser trailer that I pulled off of Comicbook.com:
"Dr. Louise Banks describes the day "they" arrived. She teaches an empty college class. A student gets some shocking news. A new report shows off the "objects" that landed. Whitaker's Colonel Weber asks to enter her office and asks her to translate a recording of aliens. Someone asks why they are here and the response is animalistic. Renner's Ian Donnelly, in a helicopter, tells Banks how important language is. His name is Ian. They're headed to "the ship." The ship stands very tall, shaped like an oval, levitating about 50 feet off the ground in a big green field. They put on orange haz-mat suits and head inside, where they find a bright white light. Some aliens, which can hardly be seen but look like flying octopuses, approach from the light. Banks wants to communicate with them. She puts her hand on glass and a tentacle hits the other side. News reports claim that the aliens may be trying to pit humans against each other. Much discussion of language ensues. Adams insists that if the aliens stay, the humans have to stay. Things get chaotic, explosions, the ship falls from the sky, Donnelly to a window."
Whoever typed up this description must have been doing it very quickly, or they forgot to disengage their auto-correct and the wrong words made it into the final draft. I made a few corrections, but if I missed one, or there's a sentence that doesn't make sense, I apologize. That doesn't take away from the fact that the teaser trailer will pull you in and make you want to see more. It doesn't give anything away like a lot of trailers do now days. Here's a quick description of the movie pulled off of USA Today:
"When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity."
While the teaser trailer is interesting and fun to watch, the full trailer for the movie is suppose to drop on August 16, 2016. Arrival will open up in theaters November 11, 2016.
