The Suicide Squad opened last weekend to an impressive $135 million dollars, but a lot of fans left the movie scratching their heads wondering about a few things that weren't explained, or why scenes that were shown in the trailer didn't make it into the final cut. In fact, there's some idiot out there that announced that he's going to sue the movie company and the theater that he went to because the movie didn't deliver what the trailer implied it would. Good luck with that one, dork.
The plain an simple is that movies go through a long post-production editing process, and certain things make their way to the cutting room floor. It's always been this way. I remember seeing a clip for Major League that showed Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, and Wesley Snipes sitting around a table at a bar and Berenger's character tells Sheen's character, "That ball wouldn't have been out of every park." Sheen says, "Yeah? Name one." Berenger replies, "Yellowstone." Funny scene, never made the final cut. It sounds like there were quite a few scenes cut from Suicide Squad, too.
Margot Robbie recently sat down with Tipsy Talk to discuss why some of the scenes that dealt with her character in the movie, Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto's character, the Joker, were cut. Here's what she had to say:
"They probably realized that the emotional through line of the story had to be the mission we were on, and kind of explaining The Enchantress's position and all of that kind of stuff. And the backstory stuff is like magic. Some of the stuff we shot is insane. They are flashbacks, and they're meant to be snippets, but I think when we were filming maybe we got too engrossed into flashbacks. Especially when you got Jared [Leto], he's going so deep with that character and we're all like going really, really deep. David [Ayer] goes really deep with the characters. Yeah, so there's a lot, but it didn't make sense to confuse the current and present storyline to incorporate all of that."
Looks like David Ayer wanted to focus on all of the characters and not just the two of them. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to see all of these cutting-room-floor shots when the movie gets released onto DVD and Blu-ray. While Ayer focused a lot of attention on Harley and the Joker, one character that he need to spend more time with was Katana. He didn't do a good job explaining her psyche and why she made the decision that she did. (If you haven't seen the movie yet, ***SPOILER!!!*** coming up!) Luckily, actor Karen Fukuhara was able to clear some of that up when she sat down for an interview with Comicbook.com. Here's what she said:
"It was a very hard scene, because Katana's loyal, she's fiercely loyal. She has the samurai spirit. Within the movie, Amanda Waller and moreso Rick Flag are her 'lords,' so she can't betray her lords, unless there's a problem with the way they're operating. When [the mission] becomes something different than justice, which she is fighting for, which her character is based on, then there's a rift, there's a problem. That's what prompts her to betray him in a way, and make that decision to go into the bar, away from Flag. But it's hard. What do I do? What's the right and just thing?"
That's just me nitpicking at things a little bit. Still a GREAT movie. You may disagree with me on that, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Just make sure you go see it. Suicide Squad is currently playing in theaters.
