Last night was the premier of the movie Suicide Squad. Even though it was just released yesterday, critic reviews for the film began to stream in earlier this week, and they weren't good. The one review that I read that I trust was done by Lucas Siegel who writes for ComicBook.com. Siegel writes that the movie solved one of the DCEU's biggest problems that people had with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and that was it's lack of humor, or as he puts it, "lack of smiles all around." Now, I have to admit that I really liked BvS, and while it didn't hold as many funny moments as an MCU movie would have, it still had some good moments. Suicide Squad fixes that problem right out of the gate, but that's not what he says made this a great movie. It was it's focus on the characters and their backstories. He does admit that there are a few flaws with the movie, but the characters in the movie overshadow these issues. He gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars. That should be really good news for DC and Warner Bros.
Except that one good review doesn't outweigh all of the negative ones that have been making their way around the web, and one of the premier sites for rating movies is Rotten Tomatoes. The way the site works is that it compiles all of the different reviews and gives the movie an average score out of 100. The site doesn't give their own reviews on movies, but uses other people's views on these movies, but that hasn't seemed to stop some DC fans from starting a petition to shut the site down. They feel that the site is intentionally unfavorable to the movies of the DCEU, while giving Marvel movies glowing scores that they don't feel that they deserve. They've gone so far as to claim that Marvel's parent company Disney is paying Rotten Tomatoes off somehow to rig the DCEU movies score. To be honest, I don't know how this would work. The only way that I could see Disney affecting the scores is by hiring a bunch of people to give lousy reviews for the site to use in putting together the scores for the DCEU movies, but what do I know. So now they've put together a petition to shut the site down, hoping to get 2,500 signatures of people that agree with them. After getting this number, they'll hand the petition over to Rotten Tomatoes personally, and then they expect the site to shut itself down voluntarily.
Really, guys? The site ticks off 2,500 people and you expect a site that has traffic in the millions to shut itself down? I have a better idea. Go see the movies that you feel are getting the shaft with their reviews, post your own reviews, and then get your friends and family to go see these movies to help their box-office take go up. That's about the only difference you'll be able to make in this sort of situation. Trust me, 2,500 signatures is not a number any of the people at Rotten Tomatoes will lose any sleep over. These are just my opinions, though. If you think that it will make a difference, then have at it.
Do you think I'm wrong? Do you think that the fix is in against DCEU movies from Disney and Rotten Tomatoes? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below. Oh, and go see Suicide Squad in theaters now and make your own opinion on the movie. Don't trust someone else's.
