Supergirl has now officially become apart of The CW, and she flew in with an attitude! While the show languished on CBS, her season 2 premier gave the network it's highest ratings for a Monday 8 pm to 9 pm television show in almost eight years. I think that the addition of Superman to the mix may have helped her a little bit, but I'm more inclined to think that it's the fans of the network and their shows that wanted to see her join The CW's DC universe. Now they have...sort of...
While Supergirl is now apart of The CW's family of superhero shows, her reality is still going to be separate from the rest of their DC lineups, which actually do share the same universe. There was some speculation that the events from the season finale of The Flash, which hinted correctly at the show using the comic book storyline Flashpoint when season 3 premiered, would some how merge Kara's universe in with that of Oliver and Barry's. That's not going to be the case, though. I'm guessing that producers thought that would be too easy of an explanation. No, her universe is going to remain separate because they are not ready to introduce aliens into the other universe. I know, alternate universes and super powered heroes and villains is believable, but introducing aliens into the mix is a little far fetched? I'm not fretting, though, I'm sure they have a direction that they want to take both universes.
Instead, when Supergirl joins the wildly popular DC Cross Over Event, she'll be heading over to the "Arrow-verse" roughly the same way that Barry made it over to hers when they did their crossover episode last year on Supergirl. This is where they lose me, if the fact that they really didn't want Supergirl to join the Arrow-verse because she's an alien...this year's crossover event actually deals with aliens! Here's what Marc Guggenheim has to say about this season's crossover event:
“This year, for our mega ‘Arrowverse’ crossover, we’re taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes. We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”
Maybe they just want to ease her into the "Arrow-verse" without trying to look too anxious, eh? Makes more sense to me than the previous explanation. Regardless, Supergirl is here to stay, and she's already made a great first impression for The CW. You can check Supergirl out Mondays at 8 pm on The CW.
