When Star Wars began it's comeback with The Force Awakens, everyone was excited when it was announced that JJ Abrams was going to direct the film. Everyone was equally disappointed when Abrams announced that he wasn't going to direct Episode VIII. That got people talking about who should take over the directing job for future films. One of the most popular choices that people wanted to see sign on was Joss Whedon, but Whedon said he had no interest in filming a Star Wars movie. That is, until recently.
Whedon was talking with Complex recently, and the topic of Star Wars came up, and if he would ever consider directing one of it's movies. Here's what Joss had to say:
"Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, 'I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?' But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, 'I want to do that.' To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture."
I can understand this sort of mentality when it comes to directing a movie. When you jump into an ongoing story, while you may be directing the film, the story is one that you have to follow, and that might limit what you want to do with the film. However, a stand alone film would allow you a lot more freedom to tell the story that you are trying to tell. These Star Wars "Anthology" films are giving directors that sort of freedom, without interfering with the story being told in the "Episode" movies. Now, the Han Solo movie that is scheduled to come out in 2018 already has it's directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, so the earliest that Joss would be able to direct an Anthology film would be 2020, when the rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi film is scheduled to be released. The subject of that film may change, especially if Whedon signs on and has a different idea to pitch at Lucasfilm. The fact that Joss helped make the Marvel Cinematic Universe such a huge success also works in his favor, seeing how both Marvel and Lucasfilm are own by Disney. Being familiar with a talented directed and having worked with him before would make his pitch (if he has one) for a stand alone to be taken more seriously, I think.
So what do you think? Would you want to see a Joss Whedon directed Star Wars movie at some point? What sort of story do you think he would tell? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
Star Wars: Rogue One will be released in theaters on December 16, 2016.
