JJ Abrams is hard at work on bringing us the next installment in the "Cloverfield Universe." The first movie in this series was Cloverfield, which came out in 2008 and was the brain child of Abrams himself, which showed us a monstrous kaiju wrecking havoc all across New York City. It was shot in the "Blair Witch" style of photography, and never really had an actual ending. It left a lot of questions unanswered. The second movie in the series was 10 Cloverfield Lane, and was released as a surprise because nobody even knew that the movie was being filmed. While the movie wasn't a an actual sequel, it did reference things in the film that eluded to the fact that the two movies did in fact exist in the same shared universe. Now, we're told that early next year we'll get the third movie in the Cloverfield Universe, called God Particle.
We don't know if this movie is going to be a direct sequel to either of the previous two films, or be an offshoot that also happens to take place in the shared universe, but it was said that the movie will help tie the other two together more. The movie will feature a group of astronauts that are on a space station orbiting the Earth, and they make a terrifying discovery. The movie will feature actors David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd.
It sounds like Abrams has a pretty big plan for this series, saying that he wants to release a new Cloverfield Universe movie every year, so he must have a lot of stories that still wants to share. My guess is as long as they are bringing in money, then we'll keep getting movies in this shared universe. The trailer for God Particle should've come out yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to see if it was released yet. The movie, though, will be released February 24, 2017.
