Syfy's New Twist On The Van Helsing Story

Yesterday I told you how FX was bring us the television series Legion, and how they've been doing some amazing things with their original programming.  Well, they're not the only cable channel to be giving us some amazing original television shows.  Syfy has also been doing this with shows like Killjoys and Dark Matter.  Now, they are adding one more to their line up, and it looks to be a lot of fun to watch.  It's a new take on an old character...Van Helsing.

So here's their twist with the character...the 13-episode series follows "Vanessa" Helsing (played by True Blood's Kelly Overton), who is the latest in a long line of famous monster hunters.  Vanessa is resurrected in a future where vampires have taken over the world.  She discovers that she holds some sort of mysterious power over the vampires and she rallies what's left of the human race against the blood suckers in a "post-Rising world."  Other actors that will be appearing on the show include Jonathan Scarfe (Hell on Wheels), Christopher Heyerdahl (Stargate Atlantis, Hell on Wheels), Paul Johansson (Mad Men), David Cubbit (Ray Donovan), and Tim Guinee (Stargate SG-1, Homeland). Producer Neil LaBute released a statement regarding the new series recently.  Here's what he had to say:

“I am extremely excited to be working with Syfy and Nomadic Pictures to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories.  This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes - both dramatic and personal - are tremendously high."

The "stakes" are high...I wonder if he meant to use that on purpose?  Anyway.  What do you think?  Is this something that you'd be interested in seeing, or did the Hugh Jackman movie of the same name pretty much ruin this character for you?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.
