As you all know, Sony is moving forward with movies involving Spider-Man characters like Venom, Black Cat, and Silver Sable. It was originally said that these movies will take place without the Web Slinger himself, since Marvel and Sony's deal allows the Wall Crawler to be apart of Marvel's MCU. Sony's "Marvel Universe" will take place outside of the MCU...or will it?
Enter Sony head Amy Pascal. You might recognize her name from a few years ago when the email scandal hit the company. She recently came out and said that the Venom movie will exist in the same universe as Spider-Man:
“Both movies will now take place in the world that we are creating for Peter Parker.” Pascal explained. “They’ll be adjuncts to it, they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world. And they will be connected to each other as well.”
Confused yet? Yeah, me too. She continued:
“There’s always a chance. I think one of the things that Kevin has done with Marvel that’s so brilliant, is bringing the fans along, and making each movie feel like a chapter in a book. That you have to read that chapter in order to go forward. And I think the investment that fans get to feel in being part of a larger story and understanding what’s happening, is something that I know Sony would want to emulate.”
Marvel hasn't commented on Pascal's statement, but I'm sure they're trying to figure out what she's talking about as well. Unless there was something in the contract that was developed between Sony and Marvel that they haven't made public, none of what she said makes sense. The only way that we'll find out the truth is to just wait and see how all of these movies play out, but if I hear anything else on this matter, I'll let you know.
