I think this is the technology that fans have been waiting a long time for!
It's no secret that James Cameron has directed a lot of great movies, but his movies have also helped create practical equipment, like the SCUBA equipment used for The Abyss, or the CGI that was used for the first time in Terminator 2. Even the 3D effects in Avatar were ground breaking. At least, they were eight years ago when the movie came out. When he announced that he was going to make not one, but four Avatar sequels, people said that he may have waited too long to capitalize off the movie's popularity. Those same people may be right, but it was then announced that Cameron is going to show these movies in glasses-free 3D. A great director, a great movie, AND new technology? I'll be waiting in line for this one!
There hasn't been much information released on this new technology yet, most likely so another movie doesn't steal the Avatar sequel's thunder, but we do know a couple of things. The "tech community" is describing the new system as "a pure laser." It will use 60,000 lumens to give the film the clearest picture and the brightest images used in a film so far. Both of these qualities are need (and wanted) for believable 3D effects. The down side? We don't know how available these new projectors are going to be when the movie comes out in 2020. Yes, in order for movie theaters to capitalize on this new technology, they are going to have to shell out (presumably) big bucks in order to show it, and this roll out could take years. I mean, you saw how long it took theaters to switch over completely to digital projectors, and the cost of the equipment put many small theaters out of business.
Since there's still a few years to go before the sequel is slated for release, James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment will still have time to work out the details for rolling out Christie Digital's new RGB laser projection system, but don't be surprised if it's not available in your area when the movie comes out...it may take quite a while for them to reach every movie theater that shows it. Many theaters may want to wait to see if the 3D effects live up to the same standard as the 3D effects that needs glasses does.
Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 18, 2020.
