Friday The 13th Reboot To Introduce Major New Character
There have been a lot of rumors swirling around the planned reboot of Friday The 13th. Some are interesting ideas, some...not so much. One of the most disturbing of these rumors is that it's going to be a "found footage" movie, a la The Blair Witch Project. Don't worry...that one was shot down almost immediately by the studio, so it seems that they do have a little common sense in them. But now it seems that one of the more interesting "rumors" will in fact make it's way into the reboot. So what is it?
The website BirthMoviesDeath is reporting that one of their sources is telling them that Jason Vorhees father, Elias Vorhees, will be making his very first appearance in a Friday The 13th movie. He's been mentioned before in the films, but has never appeared. He was supposed to make an appearance in the 1986 movie Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives at the end of the film visiting Jason's grave, but that scene got cut. The article that I read on this said, "The idea was that Elias was fully aware of the kind of monster his son was and knew he had been resurrected, but this moment got cut, and fans never got to learn about this mysterious man in the original series." Even though he's never appeared in the movies, he has made appearances in novels and comic books that are non-canon stories that take place outside of the films. From these tales, we know that Elias is an intimidating man himself, just like his son.
We don't know what sort of role Elias will be playing in the movie, but what does seem to be the consensus is that it won't just be a cameo role. While he probably won't be going on a killing spree with his son, he may be going on his own tear opposite Jason during the film. I'm curious to see what happens when they do finally meet up.
While not much else is known about the movie (being written by Aaron Guzikowski) we do know that it will feature Jason, sporting his hockey mask and wielding his machete, but he won't start out the movie looking like the iconic killer that we've all grown to know. Producer Brad Fuller says that the film is kind of an "origin-ish" movie, and it will retell Jason's story from the beginning, which will also include his mother, Pamela. However, there will be "new or unrevealed elements that help distinguish it from what's been seen before."
Just for the record, everything that I put in quotes was from Adam Holmes' article that was posted up on Cinemablend, so thanks Adam for your reporting on this story. No release date has been set for the film, but as soon as I hear something I'll make sure to let everyone know.
