A Possible "The Last Starfighter" Television Series
I've previously posted that there was a rumor of a remake for The Last Starfighter, but it was quickly squashed by the original writer, Jonathan Betuel, who owns the property rights to the movie. Now, it seems that the same person who said there would never be a movie remake is telling Variety that he's wanting to turn the movie into a television series.
The television series won't exactly be a remake, and it won't follow immediately after the storyline of the movie. In the film, a guy gets recruited to fight in an intergalactic war after beating an arcade game. This time, though, instead of following the 'Starfighters" into battle (a battle that was won, by the way) it will show them more as "space cops" that travel around the galaxy, policing wherever they are needed. This would make for an easier television series, giving them the ability to change up characters and story lines week to week.
Apparently, there's going to be a VR portion to the show, if I read the article correctly. Here's what Blastr.com had to say about this part:
"The VR segments will apparently be optional for those who have the hardware and will allow viewers to interact with elements like rooms, ships, and other fairly mundane objects rendered fascinating by the fact that they're in the world of Starfighter."
I don't know about you, but I don't know anybody that has any sort of VR equipment that they could use for this.
I don't know how far along in the process the show is, or if it's even been green-lit as a go. Since it's the creator that's talking about it, I'm assuming that this is more than just a rumor. Of course, the article could have just been a public pitch to studios to see what kind of response he'd get. What do you think about a Starfighter television show? Me personally? I'd rather see another full-length feature film.
