This Doesn't Sound Good For Indiana Jones 5...
When Disney announced that they were going forward with a fifth Indiana Jones movie, there was a lot of excitement about the prospect of a new (and hopefully better) film featuring our favorite archaeologist. Now that Disney owned the rights to the character, and also with the financial success they had with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many hoped that we would get something worth going to see...unlike Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. However, a recent interview that was done with Frank Marshall (the franchise producer) kind of threw water all over our hopes of that happening.
In the interview, Marshall said that the fifth installment would be a "continuation of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull story." As sad as it was to hear this, it really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The writer of the screenplay for the Crystal Skull movie, David Koepp, was hired to write the next chapter of the Indy storyline. In Koepp's defense, he was brought on board for that movie to "clean it up". The story had already been decided on, he just came in to put the finishing touches on it. He didn't actually come up with the story himself. In my opinion, though, that's of little reassurance.
Now, when they say "continuation," I don't believe that the movie will pick up immediately after the wedding between Doctor Jones and Marion. None of the other movies really picked up right after the previous one, although aspects of the previous films were often mentioned. I think this would be a good way to get rid of Mutt. The character never seemed to fit into the movie, and seemed more cardboard than anything else. Just say he's gone off to boarding school or something and take him out of the movie completely. It hasn't been said if Karen Allen has been asked to come back as Marion Ravenwood (a.k.a. Mrs. Henry Jones, Jr.) so it's possible that Indy's home life won't be mentioned at all, and we'll just get a good adventure movie.
Not a lot is known about what the story will deal with. We know there won't be any Nazi's going up against Indy, and we don't know if the Russians will play apart in this one. In my opinion, they were a poor substitute for the Nazi antagonists, it just didn't feel the same. What we do know is that Harrison Ford is coming back, Steven Spielberg will be directing it again, and that it is set for release July 19, 2019. Outside of that, your guess is as good as mine as to what we can expect.
What are your thoughts on this little bit of news? Does this make you worried, or are you ambivalent to what you hear and will start making an opinion on things after you see the trailer for the film? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
