Why Do Movie Companies Continue To Keep Doing This?
Yes, we are going to be blessed with another reboot, since movie companies don't seem to take the hint after such triumphant successes like Total Recall, The Karate Kid, and Conan the Barbarian. There are plenty more that I could name, those are just the first three that came to mind. The most recent reboot to be announced is Flash Gordon.
I remember watching Flash Gordon when it was first released back in 1980. It was so horribly campy that it was awesome. The cheesy special effects and sets seemed to draw inspiration from the old black and whites that were made, and the cast that they put together was perfect. My favorite character in the movie was Brian Blessed's Prince Vultan. Flying around with those wings, leading an army of Hawkmen? Who wouldn't want to be that guy! And it's soundtrack? Queen knocked it right out of the park! It was a great movie to see at that age, and it's still one of my favorites.
So what's the best way to pay homage to a movie classic? Ruin it with a reboot. Why do I think that they'll ruin this movie? It was from a quote I read from writer Mark Protosevich when asked about the film after he'd been asked to take over the script. Here's what he said:
"I can't wait to get started and if you're curious about the take? I'm not saying a word. All I'll say is this - it will be nothing like any version of Flash Gordon you've seen."
Great. Someone's unique vision to update a classic. What could possibly go wrong? This isn't the first time someone has tried to revive the Flash Gordon name. Syfy did a horrible job with a series a few years ago, and back in 1997 there was talk that a new Flash Gordon movie was in the works, but after the box office bomb that was John Carter, it got shelved. Now, with the success of movie like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie studios feel that the timing is right to try again.
They will never be able to mimic the tone of the original, or the love that people have for the 80's movie. Let's just hope that it's not completely awful and they give us something fun to watch.

This might be the rare circumstances in which the reboot has to be better than the original. Even though I watched Flash Gordon over and over again as a kid, it was seriously a bad movie. We watched the last half hour a couple weeks ago and my kids laughed like it was a comedy.
