Marvel's Future Movie Plans For...The X-Men?
One of the things that has made Marvel's films as good as they are is that they have followed a certain plan. It's been a long, well-thought out plan. It all started with...well, It officially started with Iron Man, but the seeds for what they were wanting to aim for were shown to us at the end of The Incredible Hulk. They built up each of their core characters, giving them their own individual movies to introduce them all to the masses, and then brought them together in one magnificent movie, The Avengers, and they've been growing ever since.
One of their plans is to retire these original characters and bring in new ones, like we saw at the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron when were shown the new line up of Avengers with the likes of Falcon, War Machine, Vision, and the Scarlet Witch. These obviously won't be the only new characters that they will be introducing us to, as we've seen with the release of Ant Man. Other characters that we'll be meeting in the near future will be Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. The big surprise out of the new crop of films is that another character that will be appearing in Marvel's films, that's Spider-Man.
This seemed like a pipe dream just last year. Spider-Man is a movie property owned by Sony, and movie companies do not like sharing their properties. There's no real good reason for them to do it. They might get some money from loaning something out, but the other company that puts the money into the making of the film will reap in all of the box office gross. In the case of Sony and Spider-Man, it became evident that with their failed reboot of the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man and it's sequel, they needed to do something drastic. What good is a property if it doesn't make you money? The agreement between Sony and Marvel allows Sony to keep the rights to the character, but they are also able to use Marvel's guidance with their films, if they allow him to appear in some of their own films. It's actually a pretty great deal for both sides.
If this deal works, and all signs are pointing to it working, why not start making plans for other properties that Marvel sold the rights to way back when? Well, that's actually what they are doing. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, said that they are making contingency plans for if and when they get all of their properties back, which has been a dream of theirs for a long time. That's not to say that there have been any talks with other studios, like 20th Century Fox, but considering how lousy The Fantastic Four reboot was, why not enter into an agreement with Fox like they did with Sony? The fact that Feige said that these plans have been floating around outside of the actual movie story lines makes it sound like if they do get these rights back, they'll be ready to integrate them into their MCU.
So while we may not see an Avengers vs. X-Men movie in the near future, there's a possibility that we still may see one.
