There have been a ton of rumors swirling around that say Peter Parker is getting the boot as Spider-Man and that Miles Morales might be getting the costumed gig. I even reported on this in an earlier post. But is it possible that we all over-looked something that was reported during the first press release from Marvel and Sony concerning the merger? Here's what Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group said when the news first broke:
"Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker's story into the future."
Notice that last line? It would be a little curious that he put that way, only to turn around and drop Peter Parker for a different version of Spider-Man. If they were to change Spidey to Miles, or someone else for that matter, then we would be subjected to another grueling origins movie! Peter Parker is the Spider-Man that everyone knows. How many readers out their are familiar with Miles Morales' origin story? Anyone?
If they keep Peter Parker as the main character, then they can just jump right in with a new story, without having to rehash the whole "getting bitten by a radioactive spider" thing. Makes sense, right?
Just because Belgrad said it, doesn't mean that they can't walk those comments back and give the costume to Miles, but then why say, "...to take Peter Parker's story into the future"? Just something to think about...
