James Gunn Says Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Will Be About Family

I know that the idea that James Gunn is telling people that this movie is about "family" may seem redundant, seeing as we've been told that Peter Quill finally finds out who his father is and meets him, but this isn't the "family" that he was referring to.  Yes, it's a part of it, but his focus on this statement was on the group as a whole...and individually.  James Gunn and Vin Diesel recently posted a Facebook video where the two were discussing the film and it's characters, primarily Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Karen Gillan's Nebula, and how they will be developed in the film.  James Gunn went first and said:

“I really feel like we give the female characters a chance to shine in this movie. Because Zoe Saldana comes in and she is so wonderfully beautiful as her character. It’s touching. And Karen Gillan as Nebula comes in, and she’s her sister, and she’s completely a much deeper character than we got in the first movie, so we get to know her.”

Diesel went agreed with Gunn and added:

“That character, the sisterhood that you explore in this movie is something we haven’t seen in film. We definitely haven’t seen it in this level of film.”

He's right, too.  When it comes to comic book movies, the focus is usually on the guys, like Captain America and Bucky Barnes in Captain America: Civil War, and Thor and Hulk in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.  Comic book movies have so few female characters that they don't have the opportunity to explore the relationships between them, whether it be family or friendship.  James Gunn concluded:

“And that’s one of the things that this movie is about… The first movie was really about becoming a family. This movie is about being a family. And what’s harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it’s being a family. That’s where you really have to deal with each other. And that’s what this movie is about. And they’re sisters. They are family, whether they like it or not. And they also want to kill each other, so it adds a new twist to being a sister.”

It will be interesting to see how Nebula ends up on the Milano, considering she wasn't really on the top of their list for potential allies. Same could be said about Michael Rooker's Yondu.  The last time we saw him, Star Lord had double crossed him and switched the Infinity Stone they had acquired with a Troll doll.  Of course, Yondu didn't look all that upset when he found out.

What are you hoping to see in the movie?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments section down below.  Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
