The third film in the updated Star Trek franchise has been a carousel of people coming and going. Robert Orci was hired on to write and direct the third act of the new series, but was released from the director's chair soon after being hired. They brought in Justin Lin, who is credited with re-energizing the Fast and Furious franchise, to take over those duties. Smart choice, on their part. He'll give an new perspective to the film, and it's sure to be visually stunning.
Then Orci was released from his writing duties on the film, and Doug Jung (writer for Confidence) was brought on board.
Now it's being reported that Simon Pegg, who's played Scotty in the last two films, is going to co-write the new film along with Jung. This should make for an interesting storyline!
Star Trek 3 is slated to be released on July 8th, 2016 to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary of it's television debut.
