Title For Sequel To "Edge Of Tomorrow" Revealed

Even though the movie Edge of Tomorrow didn't do "great" in the theaters (it doubled it's production cost, which means it basically broke even), it's gained quite a following ever since it was released on DVD and Blu-Ray.  One of the reasons some critics think that the movie did poorly was because of it's name, so when it was released on DVD, they used the movie's actual title as a "secondary title," and instead used Live, Die, Repeat on the front of the cover.  


Since the movie's spike in popularity once it was released on DVD, rumors started to swirl about a sequel being made.  That got fans excited (at least, for everyone that actually saw the movie!) and this past weekend we learned that there will in fact be a sequel.  It's title?  Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat.  Like Matt Wood wrote over at Cinemablend.com, at least they didn't call it On The Edge of The Edge of Tomorrow!  (Good one, Matt!)  When it was revealed, director Doug Liman had this to say about the upcoming project:


"We have an amazing story! It's incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we'll do it. But it's not an if, it's a when."


Liman has also said that the movie is "a sequel that is a prequel," whatever that means.  He went on:


“I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea.  So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”


Yep.  That cleared it up.  Clear as mud.  This still doesn't take away from the fact that we will be getting a sequel to a truly great science-fiction movie.  The reason I enjoyed it so much was because one, it was original, and two, it was a stand alone film...well, until recently anyway.  If they weren't able to make a sequel, it could stand up on it's own.  The movie was based off of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's "Japanese military science-fiction light novel" All You Need Is Kill, but it sounds like that the sequel will be more of an original story rather than being adopted from other sources.


No word on when the movie will start filming or when it will be released, but as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you all know.

5-25-77 coming 5-25-17

This past weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 hit theaters, and science-fiction/comic book fans ran to theaters in droves to see the movie.  James Gunn, who directed the film, has been giving us an escape from reality with his movies, as has JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and numerous other directors.  One of those directors is Patrick Read Johnson.  Have you ever wondered where these directors get their inspiration?  In the case of Johnson, we'll soon be able to see first hand what set him on his way as a director.  Check this trailer out:

Johnson's biopic film has been a lifetime in the making.  Not the movie itself, but his journey to get to the point so ha could make it.  It started with the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, but truly spiked when he saw Star Wars.  Johnson started working on this movie back in 2004, and after 13 years, he's finally completed it, just in time for the 40th anniversary for Star Wars.  So enjoy the trailer, and let me know what you think about it in the comments section down below.

Is This The End Of Batman?

***SOPILERS FOR BATMAN #22***

This week's release of Batman #22 had both Batman and Flash back in the Flashpoint universe, which was supposed to have been erased, but something (or someone) was holding it together.  However, for whatever reason it was held together vanished, and it began to unravel once again. 

Prior to the Flashpoint universe's destruction, Bruce was able to spend some time with his father, Thomas, the Batman from the Flashpoint universe.  After learning about Bruce's son Damien, Thomas asks him to do something before he and Barry left to go back to their own universe.

So will Bruce heed his father's advice and give up the mantle of the Bat?  Probably not, but I'd like to see how he struggles with doing what he does best, or listening to his dad.  And it looks like Dr. Manhattan might finally make his appearance at the end of this crossover...



Marvel Comics Trying To Do Damage Control

It looks like Marvel Comics is alienating their readers even further...


It's no secret that Marvel's comic book sales have been in a downward spiral for a while now.  Even Marvel's VP of comics, David Gabriel, had to admit this in a meeting with distributers.  In that meeting he said that readers don't want to see more diversity in their comics.  He attributed this to their slumping sales.  I don't know if that's really the case, look at the Miles Morales Spider-Man.  He's one of their best sellers right now.  I believe that it has more to do with them screwing around with classic characters and turning them into something that they're not.  Examples?  Having Thor lose his hammer only to have Jane Foster become the "female" Thor, or having Tony Stark pass the Iron Man suit over to Riri Williams, or more recently having Captain America turn into a Hydra agent.  It's not that they're upset about "diversity in comics," they just want to read their favorite comics and enjoy the characters that they grew up reading, not a different person playing that same character.  I know I used Morales' Spider-Man as an example of a great comic book, but he's in a different universe than Peter Parker's Spider-Man, and you can still read Parker's Spider-Man adventures if you want to.


The Captain America turn is really hurting Marvel's sales.  Thanks to the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, people associate Hydra with Nazis.  Marvel has tried to explain to people that Hydra and Nazis aren't one and the same, but it hasn't worked.  In fact, their sales have dropped so much that Marvel sent out a press release begging fans to stay.  Check it out:


“With Marvel Comics’ ‘Secret Empire,’ the forces of Hydra have taken over and, due to the villainous actions of the Red Skull, have manipulated Marvel’s greatest hero, Captain America, and forced him to adopt their cause."


"At Marvel, we want to assure all of our fans that we hear your concerns about aligning Captain America with Hydra and we politely ask you to allow the story to unfold before coming to any conclusion. Captain America, will always be a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe who will stand up for what is right, and ‘Secret Empire’ will be the biggest challenge Steve has ever faced.”

It might not sound like actual begging, but can you think of another time when they sent out any statement asking fans to stick around to see how the story unfolds?  Most people would do that on their own, unless the story sucked or the story angered them to the point of dropping the title from their reading list.  Kind of like what's happening now with Captain America.  Steve Rogers may return to the man he was before this Hydra storyline began, but unfortunately for Marvel, the damage has already been done.

New Role For Jeremy Renner

This one caught my eye, may not be your cup of tea, but I wanted to share it with you anyway.  Jeremy Renner has recently been signed on to play John Henry "Doc" Holiday in an upcoming feature that will be based on two different novels about the famous gun slinger, Doc and Epitaph: A Novel Of The O.K. Corral.  Renner and Don Handfield's production company, The Combine, will be producing the film.  in a joint statement, Renner and Handfield had this to say about the upcoming feature:


“We are excited to re-introduce this classic American character to a whole new audience by chronicling Doc Holliday’s incredible transformation from Average Joe dentist to a man who Wyatt Earp called the ‘nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun [he] ever knew.’”


Renner will join several other actors that have portrayed the dentist-turned-gun slinger in films.  My favorite was Val Kilmer in the movie Tombstone, which also starred Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp.  Kirk Douglas played "Doc" in the movie Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Stacey Keach played him in Doc, and Dennis Quaid played him in Wyatt Earp. 


While Renner is best known for his supporting role as Hawkeye in the MCU movies, he's proven to be a cinematic draw for fans in other movies like The Hurt Locker (which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor) and The Town (which he was nominated for an Oscar for best Supporting Actor), a couple of Mission Impossible movies, and last year's The Arrival. As I hear more about this film (like when it will start filming and when it will be released) I will let you know.

Saw A Very Fun...And Very Dark Movie This Weekend!

Sorry I didn't post earlier today, I was on the road traveling across states, but it was worth it!  I went home to visit my folks (which EVERYBODY should do when you have the opportunity!)  and they treated me to a movie that was at a little independent movie theater called The Neon.  It was not a movie I would've been able to watch (at least, not until it came out on video, but there aren't that many "video stores" around anymore) but I'm glad I saw.  The trailer looked great, and it really was, but it was a lot more dark and twisted than the preview made it out to be.  Still, it was a lot of fun!  Check out the trailer down below, and I'll be back tomorrow with a regular post!  Enjoy!
